Hermidale Beach Volleyball
TUWAWA WINS THE BIG ONE!
Saturday in Hermidale was the place to be. The 6th Annual Hermidale Beach Volleyball competition was held. The day was successful with 11 teams competiting for the $1000 first prize money on offer.
Each team played 6 games before the top 8 teams battled it out in knock out finals. The two local Hermidale teams “The Innovators” and the “Old Hermidale Cricketers” looked strong leading into the finals however Tuwawa from Cobar  and the Sack Dragons were both firing and made their way to the Grand final. As Hermidale Beach Volleyball regulars, Tuwawa had refined their skills which gave them the edge winning 10 -7 to take the $1000 from Alister Ewan’s Sack Dragons, also from Cobar.
On accepting their prize money, Tuwawa generously donated $500 of their winnings back The Sack Dragons then followed donating all of their $500 second prize winnings. This generous offer by both teams is very greatly appreciated. With 8 consecutive years of drought, fund raising in a small community is very hard. Great work teams! The consolations final was won by the Nyngan Hospital Team, also beach volleyball regulars, it is great to see them take home some money. They are donating their winnings to the kidney machine for the hospital. A big thankyou to our umpires on the day, Spearsy and Barto, great job again boys.
We had great weather. The kids were kept busy all day. When they weren’t swimming in Ocean Hermidale, they were competing in the sand castle competition, kids beach volleyball competition, message in a bottle and the buried treasure game. The sand castle competition attracted 10 nominations and was won by Michaela, Lauren, Jema and Chloe of Hermidale with a giant Croc. This competition was sponsored by the Hermidale Outback Lodge.
The Pinnacle Penguin Relay was a real crowd pleasure with 4 from each team having to put on snorkel and flippers and run the full length of the beach. There was lots of funny looking penguins out there, but the most amusing was the Sack Dragon Penguin who opted to swim ocean Hermidale rather then plow through the sand. Then next event was the Coates Rubber Ducky Challenge with 4 team members having to jump in a tractor tube, run across the beach, through the ocean and back again. The Sack Dragons took out the challenge winning $200 which they kindly donated back. Thanks guys!
With the lights from Coates Hire in Cobar, the evening continued well into the night. Mick Moritz from Elders Nyngan was our Auctioneer and did a great job auctioning off the AgNVet swag, the Nyngan Rural Agencies Ice Kool esky, a dozen bottles of wine and Gavin our life guard who has now found a home in Cobar with a “Sack Dragon”. We raised $980. The raffle of a 22” flat screen TV from Harvey Norman Cobar was won by Col in the JFPMR Glitter Dragons. These guys travelled all the way from the Central Coast. A special item a McGrath Foundation pink Cap was then auctioned for the McGrath Foundation. This cap raised $300 for a great cause.
An evening of Karoke followed by our announcer Tim Dennis from “Bad Company Sound & Commentary Team Dubbo”. Tim once again did a fantastic job on the microphone all day and even managed to compete and commentate at the same time. The atmosphere Tim and Shippy created was amazing.
The day was a great success and raised much needed funds for the Hermidale Tennis Club to build a storage shed and the Hermidale Bush Fire Brigade for essential maintenance. A big thankyou to Jamie at the Hermidale Hotel. Without his support and the support of all our other sponsors we couldn’t hold such a successful event. These sponsor are listed at the back, please support them where you can. It is sponsors that make the day happen. We look forward to seeing you all next year at the 7th Hermidale Beach Volleyball Day.
